ICYMI: Texas Gov. Vs H-E-B; Arizona Trying To Pass A Horrendous Abortion Law
Texas Governor Greg Abbott upset with H-E-B chairman
Charles Butt is the chairman of H-E-B, maybe the biggest grocery food chain store in Texas. Recently he has been in some hot water with Gov. Abbott, who always seems to be in some kind of feud with someone. This time, he has his eyes set on the H-E-B chairman. According to many reports, Abbott is upset because Butt has donated around 1.3 million dollars to a total of nine other GOP candidates. Of those nine, seven of them are opposing the Abbott voucher plan. For those who don’t know, School vouchers are taxpayer-funded subsidies given to private schools and vendors without transparency and accountability for results. Meaning that they would be taking money away from public schools, where the kids need it more. It seems that Butt is trying to help the middle and lower class by trying to prevent the voucher plan from becoming a thing. If the plan goes through, this means they would be able to take away money from public schools and give it to private schools. H-E-B was listed as a sponsor for an LGBTQ+ pride event in 2022 in Austin, which is a big no from the GOP. The GOP is also not a fan of H-E-B accepting food stamps. All this is coming out even after H-E-B was one of the biggest donors for Abbott in 2023, donating 150,000 dollars to his campaign. Abbott is one of the most extreme people in the GOP and the state of Texas and makes the entirety of Texas Congress look awful.
Arizona Close To Passing A Near Total Abortion Law
After almost two years of going back and forth in court, the Arizona Supreme Court decided Tuesday to pass a 160-year-old abortion law. This would make it to where it is illegal to have an abortion unless the mother’s life is in danger. This also means there would be no incest or rape exceptions. Anyone who helps the women facilitate this like doctors, would also be sent to prison. The law has not gone into effect yet. There is a 14-day period in which the plaintiffs have a chance to pursue other challenges of the ruling. Arizona’s attorney general is not happy about this possible ruling and stated, “Today’s decision to reimpose a law from a time when Arizona wasn’t a state, the Civil War was raging, and women couldn’t even vote will go down in history as a stain on our state.” If this law does go into effect, Arizona would join Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi as the states with the most extreme bans, allowing almost no exceptions. People seem to think those who have abortions do it for fun and because they’re selfish. When in reality it’s a terrifying experience and even people who really want an abortion struggle after. According to a study, Texas leads the country in rape-related pregnancies with a staggering 26k since the total abortion ban. Another crazy statistic is that in 2021 the total number of abortions was down 36% compared to 1991 according to an article by pewresearch.org. In the same article, it states that 93% of abortions in 2021 happened during the first trimester, which is at 13 weeks or less. The bottom line is abortion is healthcare for women and we should have no say in what a woman should or shouldn’t do with her own body. The part I find the craziest about these abortion bans is that they are being decided by men at the top when they have no clue what women have to go through.
